KIT 207 - Self Study 4 (Game Ideas)

Game Idea 1:

This game would use the twin stick style of control to navigate the world, which would be vast and mysterious. In the distance you would hear the gonging of a tower of some description, the top of which you would be able to see over a thick mist. The goal of the game would be to slowly make your way towards the tower, the primary experience of the game being centred on the journey. Pieces of storyline would be given to you along the way either through dialogue or by finding texts of some sort, but the storyline wouldn't be the primary component of this game. The sound design would also be a major part of the world creation, adding atmosphere to the environment. I think this game would be successful because the mystery of the world would draw the player in. Even though it's a simple game, a good atmosphere can be enough to drive interest. This game's target audience would be anyone who likes a chill game where there isn't any real challenge, and is more of an experience than anything. The prototype of this game would focus on the atmosphere.

Game Idea 2:

This game would be a 3d side scrolling shooter, where the twin stick style would be used to both navigate the world and aim your gun. This game would feature some platforming elements which would start simple and progress in complexity as you work through the game. The fighting mechanics would remain simple, potentially only featuring powerups such as a damage increase. This game would feature multiple levels where you have to fight through enemies in order to reach the end and progress to the next one. There would also be at least one boss level at the end, but potentially smaller ones throughout the game. The primary target of this game would be having incredibly smooth mechanics and controls so that everything feels like it is in your control so that if you die, it feels fair. I think this is what makes a shooter/platformer successful, because nothing is more frustrating than dodgy physics. If you fail in this game, you can improve and overcome the level, rather than being cheated out of winning again. This game's target audience would be anyone who enjoys simple but challenging game, which is quite a large demographic, I believe. The prototype of this game would focus on the basic gameplay and mechanics.
